Alpacas are friendly, gentle animals.  But beware they do like to spit!  Like us, they seem to enjoy being in the mountains of Telluride in their layers of cozy alpaca.

One of the best natural fibers there is--alpaca is as soft as cashmere and warmer than wool.  It comes in 21 natural colors ranging from white to jet black with shades of grey, fawn, caramel and brown in between.

Alpaca is a good “green” choice for keeping warm--environmentally-friendly and naturally-renewable.

We shear our alpacas once a year in late spring.  Shearing takes about 15 minutes per animal under the capable hands of Sonnie Gustamantes and his grandsons.  Working with them has been a a truly amazing experience that connects us to longstanding traditions in the Southwest.  You can read their inspiring story here http://ediblesouthwestcolorado.com/sonnie-gustamantes-the-art-of-shearing

After shearing, we “skirt” the fleece to remove the larger bits of vegetation, etc.  The fleece is then ready to be sent off to be made into yarn and other finished products.
